| Breaking News | | Sunday, June 1st, 2008: Hirsh Pitches Mets to Shutout Victory Jason Hirsh was downright nasty in pitching a 6-hit shutout against St. Louis. His splitter was diving, his slider was breaking, and the Cardinals were swinging and looking bad. The Mets hurler fanned 4 and walked 2 in a strong outing. "As the game went on, he got stronger," his manager said. "I thought he really turned it up a notch in the eighth and ninth and probably threw his best breaking balls in those two innings. They put a lot of balls in play early in the count because he was throwing strikes."
Hirsh is in his first season in the league. The 26-year-old rookie has pitched 44 innings in 7 starts, fanned 47 batters, walked 8, and put up a 3.68 ERA with 1 win and 2 losses. | | Tuesday, May 13th, 2008: Dodgers Blank Cardinals, Lowe Notches Win Los Angeles hurler Derek Lowe was at his best as he whitewashed the St. Louis Cardinals today. "He just kept the ball down, did a good job, made his pitches," said the St. Louis manager. "We didn't do a good job making adjustments, so we helped him out a little bit." Lowe fired a 1-hitter and totaled 7 strikeouts and 3 bases on balls in the shutout performance.
Lowe throws well for a man of his age. He is not a spring chicken anymore, but he still makes the hitters look up and take notice. This 34-year-old hurler can still do it on the mound in 2008. This season to date, he has a record of 4 wins and no losses with a 0.92 ERA, has appeared in 8 games, and has struck out 43 in 58.2 innings. Those are stats a lot of younger pitchers would envy. | | Monday, May 5th, 2008: National League Awards Scott Rolen of St. Louis Player of the Week Today the National League announced its Player of the Week award winner: St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Scott Rolen, who batted .538 with 2 home runs and 10 RBI.
